What’s one of the best ways to dig into local life when traveling? Indulging in the best traditional cuisine! Local dishes, food tours, cooking classes and open markets all offer a glimpse into the unique food culture of a city.
While globetrotting for new foodie adventures is a passion for many, normal life still persists. If you can’t make it to a foreign land for a new bite as often as you may like, bring the smells and tastes of these countries into your own kitchen.
How? Spices! Regions use unique blends of seasonings to flavor ingredients we are often already familiar with – meat, vegetables, fruits and grains. Not all world spices can be easily found at the grocery store though- frustrating, right!? Enter RawSpiceBar.
RawSpiceBar makes world flavors accessible. Fresh spice blends, delivered right to your doorstep, along with globally inspired recipes will satisfy your foodie soul from the comfort of your own kitchen. The concept is simple – each month a box arrives containing 3 freshly ground spice blends specific to a particular area of the world along with 3 recipes using these spices. Pick up a handful of fresh, local ingredients and you are set to put world food on your table each month.
The recipe featured in this post was created using the RawSpiceBar’s Argentine Spice Box which included Dark Coffee & Chilis (for Coffee-Chili Rubbed Steaks), Chipotle Smoked Salt (for Grilled Summer Vegetables) and Sun-Dried Tomato Pizza Spices (for Sun-Dried Tomato Pizza Sauce & Pizza).
Like the spice you try? Buy it individually from RawSpiceBar to add it as a staple in your spice cabinet. Spices rotate on the site, so definitely stock up if there’s something you love.
Now, time to share this awesome recipe with you, because who doesn’t love a freshly rubbed, grilled steak in the summer!?
RawSpiceBar’s Coffee-Chili Rubbed Steaks
**RawSpiceBar’s Coffee Chili Dry Rub, 3-ounce packet**
1.5 tablespoons cumin seeds
1/4 cup freshly ground coffee beans
Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper
1.5 tablespoons chili powder
1.5 teaspoons ground cinnamon
4 8-ounce flat iron steaks
**While this rub is no longer featured in the site’s spice rub selection (note my previous tip for stocking up on favorite spices) you can make your own by combining dark roasted coffee, ancho chili powder, smoked paprika and cumin.
1. Pat steaks dry then brush liberally with canola oil and sprinkle with salt.
2. Combine all spices & coffee and spread the rub on a baking sheet. Roll the steaks into the rub to fully coat (using about 1/2 tablespoon per steak). Cover and refrigerate for 1 hour maximum.
3. Preheat grill to medium high, drizzle canola oil on both sides of the steak and grill 5-6 minutes per side (or until desired level of pink is reached)
4. Transfer steaks to cutting board and let rest 15 minutes.
5. Top with your favorite chimichurri sauce and enjoy! We used this great chimichurri recipe from Gimme Some Oven.
